Foot and Ankle Conditions

The foot and ankle joints provide stability and support during weight bearing.

Injuries to the foot and ankle are extremely common. These injuries often occur during high intensity sports such as football, soccer, netball and tennis. The most common mechanism of injury is the inversion ankle sprain. This occurs when the ankle rolls inward. An ankle sprain is the stretching and/or tearing of ligaments however sometimes the tendons also get damaged.

At BOC we will accurately assess and diagnose the area and determine the best method of ankle treatment. Initial management for a sprained ankle is commonly the RICE principles (rest, ice, compression and elevation), followed by having some manual ankle osteopathic treatment such as soft tissue massage. It is very important to correctly rehabilitate the ankle. Strengthening, balance and proprioception exercises reduce the likelihood of re-injury. Your osteopath will provide you with a management program.

There are many other foot injuries and ankle injuries such as stress fractures, plantar fasciitis, avulsion fractures and various types of heel and foot pain, your osteopath will be able to diagnose and manage many of these or refer you to another health professional as required.
